Previously on SBPDL: Because of Pervasive Black on Black Violence in Durham, North Carolina, Black Activists Call for African-Pride Crosswalks to Reduce Black Violence

Yes, a red/black/green painted crosswalk will convince black people to stop killing one another and have pride in their community! This Pan-Africanist crosswalk will unite blacks, which somehow scares whites in Durham… All it takes for blacks to stop engaging in crime and shooting one another is a red/black/green crosswalk![Durham Is Spending Millions on Public Art. Why Won’t It Paint a Crosswalk Near McDougald Terrace?, Indyweek.com, December 3, 2019]:

In August 2018, Paul Scott asked the Durham City Council to paint a dilapidated crosswalk in the McDougald Terrace housing project in the Pan-Africanist colors red, black, and green—a way to “instill self-pride” in the impoverished and violence-plagued community, he says.

“I thought it would be a good look for McDougald Terrace,” Scott says. “Maybe if gang members saw those colors, they would lay down their gang colors.”

Scott has often resorted to untraditional means to effect change. A decidedly unorthodox Baptist pastor, former Herald-Sun columnist, and founder of the Black Messiah Movement—which combines black liberation theology with social activism and argues that black communities need to become their own saviors—he spends Sunday afternoons in West Durham handing out books that celebrate black history.

Scott says the city was initially receptive to his sidewalk proposal. Department of Transportation officials assured him “it wouldn’t be a big thing to get done between November and December,” he says.

But then “they moved the carrot,” he says, asking him to get community support. So he started a Change.org petition that garnered about twenty-five signatures.

From there, he says, he was told there needed to be a community meeting “to determine who wanted the crosswalk painted. This is a community who is never asked its opinion on anything.”

Scott says he went through months of phone calls, emails, and meetings, but nothing came of them. Eventually, he decided to put his energy elsewhere.

But in October, Scott began thinking about the crosswalk again when McDougald was the site of one of a string of high-profile shootings that killed two and injured eight in Durham in forty-eight hours.

Then, last month, the neighborhood was again in the public glare after a man was shot to death in broad daylight not far from where Scott wants to paint the crosswalk.

The violence, city council member Mark-Anthony Middleton wrote on Facebook, “is leaving in its wake a trail of young black bodies, heartbroken families, and a frightened community. What is possibly more ominous is that I believe we are creeping up on a dangerous inflection point. That point is where we become desensitized to the gun violence robbing us of our children because it happens so often. … It is time for true organizing and activism.”

It’s easy to dismiss Scott’s proposal to use art to combat violence as an empty gesture. But at the moment, nothing else is stopping the gunfire in McDougald Terrace—not the police substation in the neighborhood, nor the heavy police presence, nor the perpetually closed Bull City United nonprofit, housed in a Ridgeway Street apartment, which aims to reduce gang violence.

Perhaps the crosswalk could serve as a bridge between McDougald residents and city leaders—in synchronicity with Middleton’s call for “true organizing and activism,” or Scott’s plea for besieged communities to become their own saviors.

In any event, it couldn’t hurt.

At a minimum, says Travis Mann, who spends a lot of time in McDougald with his toddler son, the crosswalk would show that city officials are paying attention.

Right now, Mann says, council members only visit “when it’s an election, or when some kid gets shot. As far as them coming out to hear from the community, hell no. So much happens in the projects that doesn’t get televised—every day, literally, something is happening.”

Scott moved his proposal back to the front burner two weeks ago, when Durham officials announced the colorful painting of crosswalks titled “Snapping!, Crackling!, and Popping!,” riffing on the Rice Krispies characters. It’s one of three creative efforts that are part of SmART Durham, the city’s $10 million, multi-year public art and urban design project.

      Scott was incensed.

“The only snap, crackle, and pop you hear in the hood are gunshots,” he says. “Carrboro [in 2017] does an LGBTQ crosswalk, and there’s no controversy. It was applauded. But if we want a crosswalk celebrating black history in McDougald Terrace, we have to go through bureaucracy, and it’s not fair.”

For Scott, the crosswalk became a metaphor. City leaders could spend millions for public art but wouldn’t spend a fraction of that on the expression of black pride in one of the city’s most marginalized communities.

So he fired off an email to council members: “You can’t imagine my astonishment when I recently learned that crosswalks are being painted in the gentrified areas downtown. What message does it send to the community when our officials pay more attention to the beautification of downtown than the areas that need it the most? Placing a crosswalk in McDougald Terrace could have helped saved lives instead of giving the well-off in Durham something to gaze at while they walk their poodles and sip Starbucks.”

Council member Jillian Johnson responded on November 21, copying Scott on an email asking the city’s neighborhood services department to give him an update.

Scott says he’s still awaiting word from the city. And he thinks he knows why his proposal has gone nowhere.

“I think any symbol of black unity scares white people,” he says. “I think that’s the two-ton elephant in the room no one wants to talk about.”

Nothing has changed since this guy started petitioning the city of Durham leaders back in 2018 to paint a crosswalk in Pan-African colors… Africans in America can’t stop killing/shooting one another in Durham, North Carolina (it has actually gotten worse, with blacks killing one another just steps from where this Pan-African crosswalk would go). So, the idea is to paint a crosswalk in the colors African nationalism, to imbue Africans in America with a sense of pride.

      A sense of purpose.

This story is not from The Onion . It’s a series story, by a paid journalist who works for the corporate (prestige) press.

Remember: our primary job is to survive the insanity of America, a nation ruled by the totalitarian ideology of egalitarianism.

Inadvertently, this story admits the violence in Durham, North Carolina is courtesy of Africans in America. Hilariously, this story asserts African-pride themed crosswalks will compel blacks to stop killing/shooting one another… when the push to have them painted in the past year has only seen more black violence near the proposed area where they’d be painted!

Just nature reminding us Wakanda isn’t real .

You can't spell " Black Messiah " on your hoodie without " Black Mess ".
      2. Why stop at painting crosswalks red, black and green? If those magical colors can stop violence, just think what having every building in black areas painted black, red and green would do! On top of that, every black person could wear black, red and green hoodies and Air Jordan’s along with dresses or pants and even paint their cars in those colors! Once all that is done, I’m sure a magical Wakanda will spring forth from the ground like a crop of fresh spring onions and everyone will live happily ever after.

However, it’s very important that, at the beginning of this Cargo Cult type ritual, that a witch doctor make all the appropriate incantations and spells to make sure the magic sticks and is effective. It would also help if he would provide everyone with charms to wear around their necks that make them bullet proof as his brutha witch doctors have done on occasion for “soldiers” in African tribal gangs. This time it will surely work!

Forward! To the Stone Age! We can do it! Yes, we can!

I never cease to marvel at this clown-world “logic.”

Yes, of course, it’s just “gun violence” that’s “robbing” them of “their children.”

Guns seem to magically levitate through the streets at night, gunning down innocent dindu-nuffins as they were on their way to their gramma’s house for chocoloate chip cookies, or returning their books to the local library.

Talking to these clown world clowns, that seems to be the very picture they paint.

I've encountered numerous references to how common among blacks is a literal belief in magic, particularly magic totems and spell-casting.

Obviously, at least at the subconscious level, blacks (and many whites, via contagion) believe that guns have magical attributes, and are literally a source of impulsion to action (i.e., "The gun made me rob that guy and then shoot him." And often we hear, "He made me shoot him when he didn't give up his phone/cash/etc..")

Seen this way, we can then understand the concept behind incrementally banning civilian ownership of guns. Those who espouse support for this think that they're removing items that harbor Black Magic from their communities.

It never seems to occur to any of them that Mexico is the apotheosis of "civilian disarmament."
      6. Tax dollar whore looking to bank off of state money so he can paint sidewalks.

Can’t fault him for living with his hand out like the others. It’s what they’ve been taught for 50+ years. He just wants more than the next guy because he feels he’s got ‘talent’.

Sadly, the magic of the paint palette he chose failed to save Africa and kwanza from their demise. Once white people sign off or are forced out of predominantly black areas, the well runs dry.

        Literally.

The wells run dry. The bridges collapse. The crops die. The power grid fails.

Our fight isn’t with these types. Everyone knows what they are and has worked around them for decades.

Our fight is with those who entertain every public benefit known to man that keeps them from having to work or otherwise be responsible in the modern world.

Again sadly, since we let the ones receiving government money vote for more government money and the political whites with agendas coupled with the guilty whites without a clue, they’ve become a tax-funded source of income for business. I think that’s why you see so many commercials featuring them now.

They’re the newest target audience. We’ve stuffed money in their pockets for decades and big business is getting in line to get some of it back.

      7. In so far as the crosswalks all have to be repainted every so often anyway, I’m all for it.

It will serve as a warning sign to anyone who wanders in by accident or from ignorance.

It won’t cut down on murder of course, and after the first week (if that) the novelty will wear off and there won’t even be a momentary boost in “black pride”.

Tell him it’s a great idea, as long as he’s OK White Pride sidewalks.

C’mon, we all know that those thin white lines that currently make up crosswalks everywhere are the only thing keeping white people from killing other whites people.

By replacing these necessary lines with ethnicolored lines, this sneaky little artist is seeking to cause the downfall of the white race one crosswalk at a time.

Before long, whites will be shooting and stabbing and beating each other to death at every intersection like the blacks currently do. Without our precious lines, how will we survive as a society?!

I vote no! Let us keep our white outlined crosswalks and our dignity. Without them we would devolve into a lower form of life.

It would be a good warning sign to remind "the community" to take their TNB back to where the crosswalks are painted in red, black and green.
      8. There must be good money in it for these clowns because their bullshit damn sure doesn’t produce results. If anything, circumstances are getting exponentially worse, especially since cops are forced to do police work with their balls tied behind their backs. Want to stop de bilence? Do the only thing to them that gets their attention, inflict severe pain as punishment for violent activity. Animals can even be conditioned to change behavior as a result of negative reinforcement. It may be insulting though to imply that these heathens have the cognitive abilities of animals, and for that I apologize to animals everywhere.

      9. My first thought was “What an abject idiocy. Do the black and white stripes remind them of drinking fountains or what?”
Then I read the burbs have their own custom crossings (that they do not use anyway*) – prolly in rainbow instead of KKK White.
So sure, as soon as they pay taxes let them have crossings (that they ignore anyway) in whatever colour they want – preferrably ones not visible at night.
It might save a few lives.

*Lawyer friend of mine once gave in to the allure of a nice summer evening after work, got picked up by LAPD (“because honest people do not walk on foot”) and spent the night in the slammer until his boss got him out 😀

Or use sidewalks, I can't count how many times I'll be driving down the street and there will be blacks walking in the middle of the street, with 2 empty sidewalks on either side of them. Then they give you dirty looks when you honk your horn behind them to get them out of the street.
      12. Anonymous[355] • Disclaimer says:

The irony here is astounding. Blacks shoot each other because they can’t and won’t follow the (white man’s) law. For the same reason, blacks don’t observe or use crosswalks. Most go out of their way to avoid crossing the street at crosswalks, as that is yet another rule created by the white man. This guy thinks that painting crosswalks in a garish African color scheme will inspire them to follow the law, when it is just as ineffective a plan as putting up “stop the violence” fliers in the local library or employment office.

More true than you realize. Sailer has brought it up on occasion - a lot of this "woke" thinking on things like "institutional racism" and "white privilege" are based on African witchcraft-type ideas about evil spirits, oppressive forces, and people with bad energy who pass it on to other people with their mere presence. Along those lines, this guy obviously thinks painting a crosswalk a certain way will impart good energy to dispel the negative ones.

The fact that this ridiculous nonsense is taking hold in the discourse and affecting policy, while those with sense and logic are utterly unable to and unwilling to confront it, is a bad omen for our nation and its future.

When the wheels come off this cart, and whites discover they cannot AFFORD to carry all these parasites (black, brown, dot, yellow, etc.), there will probably be some riots.

The model for how that will turn out is probably Detroit in 1967.

There's a story, possibly apocryphal, that a tank used its main gun to level a church steeple in which a rioter/sniper was ensconced.

Inner city riots only work because they're tolerated. I think the next go round of this, tolerance will be in Very Short Supply.

Showing me MLK BLVD was my father's version of John Derbyshire's infamous talk. Every time he took me to visit a college when I was in high school, whether we were touring in Baltimore, Chicago or wherever, he would (I think in retrospect, not by accident) wheel me through a nearby MLK blvd as part of the campus area exploration process of the visit. This gave me something to think about when, later in the day, I would go to watch a pasty mendacious admissions officer, his fat bulging through his sweater vest, spittle and waddle and twaddle about the profound diversity of his university's student body.

White people have magic, and blacks demand we share it.

How did that that work out when they thought changing street names in black areas to MLK Blvd. would make them more civilized?

        Make them more civilized?

In the early 1970s it was considered just enough appeasement to prevent a few riots, but I don't think anyone expected a decrease in the general level of TNB.

When the wheels come off this cart, and whites discover they cannot AFFORD to carry all these parasites (black, brown, dot, yellow, etc.), there will probably be some riots.

The model for how that will turn out is probably Detroit in 1967.

There’s a story, possibly apocryphal, that a tank used its main gun to level a church steeple in which a rioter/sniper was ensconced.

Inner city riots only work because they’re tolerated. I think the next go round of this, tolerance will be in Very Short Supply.

Key West painted the crosswalks along Duval St rainbow colors, and it’s like gay central down there now, so this guy might be on to something.

I was thinking the same thing myself. formerly Miss Greenbaum was the reason I would read the comments here. Often I would scroll through to read her witty and truthful posts. I often giggled at her replies and they quote often mirrored my own thoughts. Anyone know what happened?
      34. @Non PC Infidel
Why stop at painting crosswalks red, black and green? If those magical colors can stop violence, just think what having every building in black areas painted black, red and green would do! On top of that, every black person could wear black, red and green hoodies and Air Jordan's along with dresses or pants and even paint their cars in those colors! Once all that is done, I'm sure a magical Wakanda will spring forth from the ground like a crop of fresh spring onions and everyone will live happily ever after.

However, it's very important that, at the beginning of this Cargo Cult type ritual, that a witch doctor make all the appropriate incantations and spells to make sure the magic sticks and is effective. It would also help if he would provide everyone with charms to wear around their necks that make them bullet proof as his brutha witch doctors have done on occasion for "soldiers" in African tribal gangs. This time it will surely work!

Forward! To the Stone Age! We can do it! Yes, we can!

You laugh! Heck, we all laugh, most of us.

But it’s exactly where we’re headed.

Hey, don't knock this. The location of every city's MLK Blvd is the same as redlining.

If you didn't already note the guys hanging around the storefront bottle store with paper bags in hand, or the trash-strewn front yards, realizing you're on MLK Blvd would tell you all you needed to know about your safety in that zone.

Showing me MLK BLVD was my father’s version of John Derbyshire’s infamous talk. Every time he took me to visit a college when I was in high school, whether we were touring in Baltimore, Chicago or wherever, he would (I think in retrospect, not by accident) wheel me through a nearby MLK blvd as part of the campus area exploration process of the visit. This gave me something to think about when, later in the day, I would go to watch a pasty mendacious admissions officer, his fat bulging through his sweater vest, spittle and waddle and twaddle about the profound diversity of his university’s student body.

More true than you realize. Sailer has brought it up on occasion – a lot of this “woke” thinking on things like “institutional racism” and “white privilege” are based on African witchcraft-type ideas about evil spirits, oppressive forces, and people with bad energy who pass it on to other people with their mere presence.

      54. Red, green and black…and intersections. Reminds me of a version of the red light-green light game some of us played on the streets in the evenings when we were kids, only played by blacks instead.
So maybe if an armed negro with bad intentions is on the red portion, his would-be victim can holler “red light!” which immediately freezes the would-be perp. The intended victim then runs across the street, practically assuring the perp will miss, and shouts, “green light!,” whereupon the perp advances to the green space and empties his mag, unintentionally ventilating the stop sign and the bus bench. A win-win situation and no one is “disrespected.”
